North Engagement Center and Main Campus students are working on becoming career minded this week. Students have taken aptitude tests, researched possible careers and have looked at pathways to get to those careers. Students have chosen the 1 career they believe is best suited for them and are now creating PowerPoint or Prezi presentation. Once completed, they will present their chosen career to the class.

Between researching careers students also watched Pixar's Inside Out to start a conversation around our emotions and how they affect our daily lives. Everyone goes through difficult transitions and hardships, Inside Out demonstrates the consequences of bottling up your emotions, Riley (the main character) suppresses sadness and in turn causes more emotional issues for herself than she would have had if she would have just been honest and spoke about her feelings. Many of our students have been through many incredible obstacles and may never have had a platform to speak about these things, like Riley is able to do at the end of the movie. Moving forward, we will be working on peeling back the layers of our emotions to more clearly understand our actions.

We are officially past the half-way mark for the second semester at North!

As the end of the school year rolls around our seniors at North High School are starting to make the hard choice of what they will being doing after graduation. College visit and applications have consumed much of their time! This week that have been diligently working on there current classes, graduation requirements and scholarships applications!

This month students are hearing back from Universities, many scholarships and receiving their financial aid packages. Despite this being a very exciting time of year it is also very stressful! Senior Elesa Vigil knows this first hand. Elesa recently found out that she has been accepted to The University of Colorado at Boulder along with a hefty scholarship. She thought her decision for school would be an easy one until she found out that she has also been accepted to the The University of Denver along with a scholarship that would make the price of DU and CU the same for her. Now she has to make an incredibly difficult choice between these amazing schools.

As these deadlines come and go the seniors keep pushing forward and plan for graduation and beyond!

Who Am i???

This week we are wrapping up the identity mask project that has been apart of a larger unit that has helped student identity and articulate the things that make up one's identity. We are very impressed with the creativity that students have brought to the table this year with this project. Also, this week marks the halfway point for the semester, meaning midterms and conferences are taking place this week. Mentors and mentees are working extremely hard on their academics to ensure that they all do well on midterms.

Self Exploration

Self exploration has been the name of the game this week. Mentors and mentees have been working hard to identify the things that make up who they are. Not only are they learning about themselves but they have also done readings on self acceptance and the importance of being tolerant of other cultures. This week was in preparation for a large project that will be started next week.  Students will make aa identity mask, expressing the side of them that they share with the world and on the inside of the mask they will express their true identity.

Bio Poems

A Bio poem is a piece of writing that helps students express specific aspects of themselves. All of the students in YESS at North had to complete one of these poems. Here is an example of a Bio poem from one of our Engagement Center seniors Jasmene Rodriguez:

Jasmene
Creative, Zesty, and Original.
Daughter of a hardworking man.
Has an eye for fashion, a love for designing, and a pride for being original.
Feels overwhelmed, stressed, and helpless.
Fears growing up, paying for college, and the future.
Competed as a student designer in the goodwill fashion show, traveled Europe, and interned at Goldyn Boutique.
Hopes to see one's own clothing line, dad happy, and a comfortable lifestyle in the future.
Born and raised in the mile high.

Love is in the Air at North High School

Love is in the Air at North High School!

This week at North High School students learned the importance of loving ourselves and identifying things in life that drain us of happiness. Students worked on a project called, “Love Cups”  this activity helps students began to think about their happiness level as something they have control of. We spent two days working on a visual representation of the love cup; during this time everyone had a blast coming up with new ways to “fill our cup” and discussing the common things that drain so many of our cups. We were so impressed by the artistic approach and hard work that was put into these cups this year.
